TAHO

For quite sometime I did not hear ‘manong’ shouting …taaaaaahooooo, taaaaahooooo every morning, he would often stay at our gate front and do his sales outcry, then my kids would come running with their glasses, they would sit on the swing near our garage and do the ‘all the way down’ thing. I missed manong too; I missed those laughing moments of my kids at the swing.

But the other day, (have saved this story for this week’s FTF) finally he showed up, I bought seven glasses, I only saved two for the photo opp, lol, the rest they gulped it down in seconds.

Taho is one of the comfort foods that is deeply etched in Filipino’s food culture, it is made of fresh soft or silken tofu, paired with arnibal (caramelized brown sugar and vanilla syrup) and sago, (pearl tapioca) but taho’s sago is bigger and usually colored ones.

You cannot be called ‘magtataho’ (taho vendor) if you can’t balance, sway your butt while carrying the yoke on your shoulder, the thing my kids keep imitating. When ‘manong’ was scooping me taho, I asked him why the absence for a while, he said, he got sick and the factory had no production for quiet a while because there were no soybeans available.

It left me wondering, I won’t get surprised when one of these days we can only read these on books, or how would you like to order taho at your favorite snack bar? Baka nga!
