I got curious seeing this new product of Mega Sardines in the market, so I picked one and tried. Whoever formulated the formula, I swear it’s good. But what awed me more was when I opened the box this silver pouch reminded me of a scene of my past.
The last time I saw this kind of packaging and the method of how this kind of food should be eaten was when I participated on the rescue and retrieval operation way back in 1990’s when Allah River in Sultan Kudarat brimmed out and practically the whole Allah Valley was transformed into a landlocked lake. That scene was so devastating, no food, no utensils to use, no place to cook, nothing to cook.
The relief goods during that time were donated by USAID in similarly same silver package, same method of how it should be eaten. At the evacuation center was a big ‘kawa’ of boiling brownish water, the attendants there will plunge all these silver packages in that big wok and minutes later, here comes long line of people begging for food. Well, thanks to Tom and Harry for that all-complete meal in a silver pouch for saving the people in that area during those fateful days.
But I just can’t help it thinking, the paranoid me, I should be stocking more of these. Waaaahhh! But jokingly aside, more than the concept of instant food available in the market today, I think this allows us to reflect that at some point it maybe adaptive but in the long run it causes more harm than good.
